“Simply put, Gillian is the all-Canadian girl. She is authentic and down-to-earth and this comes across in her music. At the young age of 22 she has a strong sense of who she is as an artist. Had she been alive in the 60's, she would have been hanging out with the likes of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.”

Gillian is one of the most promising up-and-coming folk artists in Canada today. She is a gifted folk- pop singer/songwriter from Vancouver, BC. She has been singing since she was old enough to speak, and she has been writing songs since the age of 9, but it wasn't until she was 18 that she picked up the guitar; and in the four years since, she's more than made up for lost time. Gillian began writing and recording her debut album: Something to Write Home About soon after picking up the guitar, and she released it in November 2008. Since then she's been on the ride of her life. Her hectic schedule keeps her busy, but if you ask her, there's nothing that she'd rather be doing. “I know this is what I'm meant to do,” she says, “There's nothing that makes me happier than writing and performing.”

Gillian Hobbs is the all-Canadian girl. She knows who she is and what she is about, and this brilliant self-awareness comes out in her music. Gillian isn't afraid of expressing her own vulnerability and through it, she enables her audiences to understand not only her, but themselves.

Influenced by Canadian legends like Leonard Cohen, Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, Jann Arden, Gordon Lightfoot, and Alan Doyle, Gillian's music is honest, heartfelt and inspiring.

What truly sets Gillian's music apart are her lyrics. She carefully crafts her melodies and accompaniment to support the strong messages in her lyrics. Her music touches and inspires those who hear it. She wants her listeners to take her words to heart and she encourages them to follow their dreams. She writes about what she knows, and each of her songs is a reflection of some part of her life. She writes about the people who inspire her. She writes about their struggles and their strengths, and she writes about her own. Her music ranges from love ballads to songs that inspire, and it expresses wisdom usually found in someone at least twice her age.

"Saying that she has a great voice is just a given. What sets Gillian Hobbs apart from most contemporary artists is how uplifting her music is. Not in a heavy-handed or preachy way either, in a way that simply lifts you up and makes you smile and sing along," says Gregory Milne, Photographer and Film-maker.

When asked what she feels is the true message of her music, she responds, "The thing that I really want the people who listen to my music to get out of it, is to know that whatever you're feeling right now, someone's been there, felt the same way and has gotten through it... and so will you."

Gillian is not shy about drawing from her own experiences. Her songs showcase her inner strength and give her listeners the courage to face their own challenges. She says:

“Music helps us understand what's going on in our lives in a unique way.” She adds, “It helps us understand that we are not alone, and that someone else knows what we're going through and has felt the same way we do now.”

It's easy to see why so many who hear her music tell her that it has helped them. They can take what they need from the richness of her tunes and lyrics, and feel the support that the songs give. Gillian continues to win audiences over wherever she goes, with her unique sound and her insightful lyrics. Look for Gillian coming soon to a venue near you.
